This book almost brought me to tears. It is a lyrical book about the heart, everyone’s heart, and its ever-changing ways of being. Some days our hearts are abundant with love and other days we need to protect our hearts. Each page has a beautifully illustrated picture that creatively shows how we see our hearts and how they can grow and be shared. The book ends with letting the reader know that they get to decide how they want their heart to feel. Opened to the world, or closed for the self, it is their decision alone.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone to read. It is a good reminder to adults that we don’t have to do something or be someone because that is what is expected of us. It shows children that it’s okay to have days where you want to be alone and protect your heart. It’s okay to feel sad or scared. But that shouldn’t stop them from planting their small heart and letting it grow. It shows the resilience of the heart in beautiful ways, and how even when it’s broken it can be repaired. I loved that each picture portrayed a different child. There wasn’t justs one protagonist in this story, there were many. Each page showed a diverse character holding their heart in some way. It was beautiful.
